The Milam Appraisal District has closed our doors to public access until further notice. The staff will be in house to answer phones and correspondence in the office Tuesday through Friday from 10AM to 2PM. We will assist the public by phone, fax, mail and email. Information can also be obtained from our website. These directives are in response to President Trump’s National Emergency Deceleration and Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Public Health Disaster Declaration.
The Chief Appraiser has granted an automatic (30) thirty day extension for Business Personal Property Renditions. The extension will move the deadline from April 15th to May 15th.
In light of the pandemic, it is important for you to know that Texas appraisal districts have been in contact with the Govern’s office and taxing unit organizations. However, there are currently no waivers or extensions pertaining to this year’s ad valorem appraisal year. Any such waivers would require legislative action. For that reason, we must continue with appraisal as required by law.
Our offices are about to undergo the busiest time of the year concerning taxpayer visits and correspondence. We are fast approaching the time to send 2020 Appraisal Value Notices. We will implement changes to address any health-related concerns; such as requiring protest to be filed online or by mail and conducting hearings over the phone.
There is currently nothing in the property tax law that allows the current pandemic to factor into this year’s property tax appraisal valuation. While we are all sympathetic to the situation we are facing, our hands are tied without legislative changes. It is our hope that we will not exacerbate an already serious time for Texans.
